Waitanyuan Overview

A comprehensive guide to the birthplace of modern Shanghai, showcasing the city's colonial history.

Waitanyuan, meaning "Origin of the Bund," is the birthplace of modern Shanghai. Located at the confluence of Suzhou Creek and the Huangpu River, this historic area features some of the city's earliest Western-style buildings.

The area was Shanghai's first foreign settlement, established in the mid-19th century. It includes the British Consulate, Astor House Hotel (Shanghai's first Western hotel), and the Union Church. Today, it's a well-preserved cultural heritage zone that showcases Shanghai's colonial history and architectural legacy.
